August Ahrens Elementary students raise over $1K for Japan relief efforts | Community Spirit
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
In light of the recent tragedy in Japan, fourth grade students at August Ahrens Elementary School in Waipahu wanted to help relief efforts through a service learning project.
The students initiated a month-long fundraiser throughout the school and community with the help of their teacher, Lynnette Garces. Soon after, all fourth graders -- and their teachers -- joined in on the project.
The fundraiser consisted of the following:
- Origami Crane Pins- Students would donate $1 to make a crane pin.
- "Help Japan" Bracelets- The community would donate $1 to receive a student-made "Help Japan" Bracelet.
- Math Trivial Games During Recess- Students would donate $1 to play a math game.
- "Help Japan" Flowers- Students and the community would donate $1 to receive a student-made "Help Japan" flower.
- "Help Japan" Bookmarks- Students and the community would donate $1 to receive a student-made "Help Japan" bookmark.
While their goal was to raise $500, the students exceeded the amount, bringing in more than $1,000. The fundraiser ends on Thursday, April 21.
A guest speaker from the American Red Cross will come to the elementary school on Friday, April 29 to speak about safety along with the current Japan situation. During that time, the fourth graders will present their check to the organization.
According to Garces, the students gave up their recess for an entire month for the special project.
